Project Description

This is a longitudinal project investigating communication recovery following severe TBI. Participants were recruited as an inception cohort and followed up over 2 years. Visits occurred at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, and 2 years post-injury.

The Discourse Protocol included the following discourse tasks:

  • Free Speech Samples -- Brain Injury Story and Recovery, Important Event
  • Picture Descriptions -- Broken Window, Refused Umbrella, Cat Rescue
  • Story Narrative -- Cinderella (or other Story)
  • Procedural Discourse -- Cheese and Vegemite sandwich
  • Conversation

    The following assessments were administered in conjunction with the discourse protocol:

  • Western Aphasia Battery-Revised -- Aphasia Quotient subtests
  • Boston Naming Test, Second Edition, Short Form
  • Northwestern Verb Naming test
  • AphasiaBank Repetition test
  • Functional Assessment of Verbal Reasoning Skills
  • LaTrobe Communication Questionnaire -- self and other
  • Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale-2 Form A -- self and other
  • Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment-2
  • Apraxia Battery for Adults
  • Neuropsychological tests of attention, information processing speed, memory, and executive function
